During this year's goldren week holiday, we checked out KOZUE HIBINO, a Japanese costume deisgner's exhibition at ICHIHARA LAKESIDE MUSEUM in Chiba. This modern art museum is located right on Lake Takataki, and hosts a region wide art festival called "ICHIHARA ART x MIX" every Spring.
You may know Kozue Hibino's work from NHK's educational channel "Nihongo de Asobo". Her costumes are whimsical, pop, eerie and avant-garde. Our kids totally loved the exhibit!

We checked out the LEANDRO ERLIGHT exhibition over at Mori Art Museum in Roppoingi. Mori Art Museum occasionally hosts "Family Hour" at certain exhibitions where families with small children are invited to view shows before normal hours. We took advantage of the "Family Hour" and headed over to the museum at 9:30am!
This exhibition which consisted of installations pieces which were interactive with elements of surprise and play was a perfect museum experience for kids. What a fun way to immerse ourselves and art and to be inspired to look at our world from a different point of view!
"An Argentinian contemporary artist of global repute, Leandro Erlich is perhaps best known in Japan as the creator of The Swimming Pool, a permanent installation at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Erlich’s works employ optical illusions and sound effects to shake up our notions of common sense. "
For the purpose of our VOL.4 workshop on Abstract Art, we looked at a whole bunch of Abstract Expressionism. We wanted to show that Abstract Art is not representations of people, objects nor landscape. Rather it is made up of shapes, colors, and lines. We handed out cut out paper hearts and asked them to raise it when they saw a painting they liked in the slideshow. They reacted to the art they saw purely and with delight. This was a fun exercise. Even a 4 year-old learned and was using the word Abstract Art by the end of the workshop!
Installation Art is a 3-D art created in a space. It often changes the way we see that space.
THREE-DIMENSIONAL: Things that have shapes, things that are not flat
SPACE: And area or a room that you can move around in
TEXTURE: The way things feel on the outside. Like, smooth, rough, bumpy, fuzzy, sandy
